Winter, anyone?

Winter, anyone?

We haven’t seen much of winter this winter, strangely enough. I don’t want to complain, exactly, because spring feels nice in January. However, it would be nice to see some snow, too. This bloomless, leafless, lifeless spring is getting dull. I’d much rather photograph a fresh snow.

This is my favorite Holga shot so far. It’s in focus! I wish I knew how I did that.

I picked up two rolls of film tonight, including my first roll of color film. Varied results. I wish I could get the hang of focusing my Holga . . .

Christmas morning

Christmas morning

I know this is a little old, but I like this picture a lot. In hopes of starting a new Christmas tradition, Pa, Rio and I rode our bikes into downtown Columbia and stopped for hot chocolate and pastries at The Coffe Zone. This shot was taken while Rio was enjoying his chocolate chip cookie, just minutes before he dumped his cup of hot chocolate all over his pants. Still, I like the idea of a bike ride on Christmas morning:)

This is the last Holga shot until i finish this next roll. It will be my first color roll, so I’m curious to see how this film compares.

Still learning the quirks of my Holga. There weren’t many keepers on this roll, either, but it was still an improvement over the last. Camera shake is definitely an issue. But I have already decided that as much fun as this Holga may be, it is not at all a versatile camera. I’m in the market for a 35mm that I can use for everything else.

I’ve got plenty of digital photos to tide us over until my next roll of film comes back. It’s not like I’m never going to shoot with my Canon anymore, anyway. But I do need to replace the lens cap on it so I can haul it around with me.

Yep, the first roll looks like hell:) Though this one isn’t so bad. But I’ve figured a few things out and the next roll can only get better.

Tomorrow I pick up my first roll of film from my Holga. we’ll see if there’s anything presentable in the batch. Meanwhile, check out these beautiful holga shots.

My Shadow

My Holga has arrived! My first roll of film will be rather experimental (got to find those light leaks), so there may not be much to show for a little while yet. But I can’t wait to play with my new toy!

More polaroids, but a much better scan this time.

Polaroid Diptych

Polaroid Diptych

Although this is an incredibly crappy scan, I am posting these polaroids in conjunction with my announcement that I will soon be forsaking the digital format for good old-fashioned film. Yep. I just ordered my shiny plastic Holga from Holgamods today. Now all I need is a decent film scanner and I’m golden. I can’t wait! Why the switch? There are a myriad of reasons. First, I’ve been growing increasingly frustrated with the limitations of my Canon G3. Although I’m sure a Canon 20D would satisfy my needs, my budget won’t allow such frivolity. I started out with a digital camera because of the shorter learning curve. Now I feel I’ve reached a point where my skill level can enable me to explore the challenges and wonder of shooting with film. Oh yeah, and I lost the lens cap for my Canon again. This is the third or fourth one I’ve had to replace. Erg. As for the Holga, I’ve had a crush on toy cameras for a while now and this seemed liked the most affordable and exciting camera for me to get acquainted with. I’m also very intrigued by the possibilities of medium format, but also a little bit intimidated. If I like it, I may get a Lubitel or Yashica next. Watch out! Basically, my tastes tend to favor vintage varieties, and cameras are no exception. I’m eager to begin my journey with film photography. So while I await the arrival of my new Holga and the purchase of a scanner, I’ll be taking a lot of Polaroids for your viewing pleasure. Let’s just hope the scans improve soon:)

Here’s to a New Year

Here's to a New Year

These are the Japanese Drummers that we had the privilege to see at Columbia’s First Night extravaganza. This show took place at the Missouri Theater. We took 5 of our kids and this show captivated their attention more than any other. Steve played with The Bait Shop Boys later that night. I took the 2 youngest boys to the children’s finale and he stayed out with the older kids. There were so many different events to choose from that there was something for everyone. Just one more reason why I love this town:)
